Lubok startede i 2007 i Leipzig som et forlagsprojekt efter at kunstneren Christoph Ruckhäbele og den grafiske designer og trykker Thomas Siemon mødte hinanden. Af deres fælles begejstring for ‘artist books’ og grafisk kunst fødtes ideen om at udgive originale grafiske bøger i store oplag med linoleumssnit af nutidige kunstnere.
I hver udgave af den såkaldte Lubok Serie inviterer kunstneren og forlæggeren Christoph Ruckhäbele 10 forskellige nutidige kunstnere til at realisere deres kunstneriske signatur i linoleumssnit. Et betydende grundvilkår er den kunstneriske ligestilling, samstillingen af unge og etablerede kunstnere uden markering af hvem der er mester eller elev. Kun formatet og farveindskrængningen til sort/hvid er fælles, resten er er frit op til kunstneren, der med glæde accepterer udfordringen og ofte bruger Lubok Serien som en mulighed for at eksperimentere. Resultaterne er tilsvarende mangfoldige. Der er publiceret 10 udgaver i Lubok Serien og mere end 120 kunstnere har bidraget indtil videre. Udgivelsen af den 11. udgave er planlagt til maj/juni 2013.
Bøgerne trykkes fra de originale trykplader på en gammel trykpresse i Thomas Siemons grafiske værksted ‘edition carpe plumbum’. De store oplag på 300 til 1500 styk gør at bøgerne kan sælges til overkommelige priser. Lubok bøgerne forsætter på denne måde den russiske tradition af samme navn: billige tryk, som blev solgt på markeder langt ind i det 19. århundrede. Som dengang skal kunsten gøres tilgængelig for et bredt udsnit af befolkningen, kunsten skal demokratiseres uden at nydelsen ved det originale værk, dets farver, taktilitet og duft mistes. Udover publikationerne i selve Lubok Serien er der også udgivet talrige originale grafiske monografier i forskellige formater og farver, eksempelvis af Katharina Immekus, Volker Pfüller, Tal R, André Butzer og Christoph Ruckhäberle. Udvidelsen af programmet med publikationer trykt i offset har siden 2009 muliggjort udgivelse af kataloger og ‘artist books’ indenfor andre kunstneriske genrer som collage, fotografi, tegning og konceptuel kunst. Udover skitsebøger af Tilo Baumgärtel, Matthias Weischer og Tal R, har LubokVerlag også publiceret kataloger af Alexander Tovborg og ‘kunsthæfter’ af Jesper Fabricius. Udgivelsesrækken udgør 85 titler indtil videre.
Udstillingen viser et bredt udvalg af Lubok bøgerne, som vil blive omgivet af et livligt udsnit af tryk på væggene.

Lubok Verlag was set up in 2007 in Leipzig as publishing project following the encounter between the artist Christoph Ruckhäbele and the graphic designer and printer Thomas Siemon. Their common fascination with artist books and the enthusiasm for the medium of graphic art soon resulted in the idea of publishing original graphic books in high editions with linocuts by contemporary artists.
For each volume of the so called Lubok Reihe (=Lubok Series) publisher and artist Christoph Ruckhäberle invites about 10 different contemporary artists to realize their own artistic signature in linoleum cuts. One determinant thereby is the equality of the artistic positions, the compilation of young and established artists without any marking of the students and their so called masters. Only the format and the reduction of the colours black and white are compulsory, everything else is left up to the artists. They happily accept the challenge and often use the Lubok Reihe as an experimental field. The results are correspondingly manifold. Ten issues of the Lubok Reihe have been published, more than 120 artists have contributed to the Series so far. The 11th issue is supposed to be released in May/ June 2013.
The books are printed from the original plates at the print workshop edition carpe plumbum of Thomas Siemon on an old letterpress. It is the high editions of 300 to 1500 copies that allow to offer the books at affordable prices. Lubok books thereby continue a Russian tradition of the same named popular broad sheets: inexpensive single sheet graphics that were sold on funfairs well into the 19th century. Like then art should become available for broad sections of the population, should become democratized without losing the pleasure of an original, its colours, its haptics and its smell. Besides the compilations within the Series numerous original graphic monographs in various formats and colours have been published, for example by Katharina Immekus, Volker Pfüller, Tal R, André Butzer or Christoph Ruckhäberle. The enlargement of the program with publications printed in offset since 2009 allows to publish catalogues and artist books in other artistic fields like collage, photography, drawing and conceptual art. Besides sketch books by Tilo Baumgärtel, Matthias Weischer and Tal R, LubokVerlag also published catalogues by Alexander Tovborg and artist booklets by Jesper Fabricius. The program comprises 85 titles so far.
The exhibition shows a wide range of the Lubok Books. These will be surrounded by a lively selection of printed sheets on the walls.
